I've made it to the Yukon! So far since I left my place on Friday I've driven exactly 3030.5 km! That's a long way from home! But not as far as some of the license plates that I've see while driving. I've seen plates from Texas, Florida and New Jersey, just to name a few.
Yesterday, July 5th, I left the Rolla and headed for my first camping spot. The Liard Hot Springs. If you haven't been you should definitely add it to your traveling bucket list. It's a great campground and the hot springs are not the kind of sterile ones that you might find at Banff; where they pump in hot water then steralise it, the result is that you are sitting in a really big hot tub. These one have been left as natural as possible. They have added nice crushed rock to the floor and some change rooms and a board walk, but the water itself is as natural as it comes, and its HOT! Much hotter than your average hot tub.
Anyways, I think I got really lucky and got the last campsite! I followed an RV into the campground and when we reached a fork in the road he went one way and I the other. I found a spot and was heading back to the main gate to pay when the RV passed by me and left. This was a relief cause the last time Kathy and I came out here we had to camp in the overflow camping, which is just a big parking lot. So the moral of the story is if you wanna camp at Liard either leave really early from Dawson Creek or Spend the night in Ft. Nelson and leave the next day
The road to Liard is a great drive, it's really twisty, and narrow, but the scenery is amazing! There were times when there was a rock face to my left and a lake to my right, with no shoulder! It was good times. I could imagine James Bond zipping through there in his Austin Martin.
Last night was my first chance to try out my camper van. It was nice and cozy and it kept the light out, which was good cause when I went to be at around 10pm it looked like it was about 6pm back home. My only quam was that this morning when I woke up I was cold, I didn't use all my blankets cause when I went to sleep I as hot. I won't make that mistake again tonight.
Today's drive to Watson Lake was fairly quick. It only took me about 2 ½ hours to get here. I saw lots of wild life today! More than I did yesterday. Yesterday I only saw a few mountain goats, but today I saw a whole herd of buffalo, there were probably 20ish buffalo just hanging out on the side of the road munching the grass. I saw about 9 black bears, there was one that I should have stopped to take a picture of, it was sitting on it's butt looking at a bus full of sight-seers! I can imagine what it's thinking, “ooo a red bus! I haven't seen one of those in ages! All I ever see are cars and trucks!” Anyways, so I made it to Watson Lake and took a tour of the Sign Post forest and went to my camp site. For those that don't know whatthe Sign Post Forest is, it's really cool! It all started in 1942 when I home sick G.I was ordered to repair a sign post that had been damaged by a bulldozer. The sign post had signs pointing to various places with their distances on them. Private Carl K. Linday decided to personalize the post by adding a sign to his home town Danville, Illinois. The idea snowballed and people have been people have been adding signs to it ever since! I'll post some pics of it later, but if you wanna get an idea of what's it's like do a Google image search for it.
For the rest of the afternoon, cause my camp site is a little bit out of town I decided just to relax for the rest of the afternoon. I had a nap, went of a walk and now I'm hanging out in the sun, sooo nice!
One more thing before I sign off, if you have ever journey up here and have your cell coverage through Rogers be warned that there is no coverage after Ft. St. John. I figured that I would at least make it to Whitehorse before I ran out of service, but that's ok. On the bright side my phone doesn't need to be charged as much!
Tomorrow it's on to Whitehorse, then Dawson City where I hear there is an “Old Time” saloon that puts on a great show! I'll be sure to tell you all about it!
~ Until Next Time
1 Any Thoughts?:
Hahaha I think the bear was probably thinking... "Oooh the red bus...lots of tasty people inside!" :) Also...I believe that there is a special drink you should have in the "Old Time" saloon...I believe you get a certificate if you can do it! How do you feel about toes?
